The RAFT approach offers students a way to write about a subject matter from a perspective different than their own. With RAFTs, the possibilities are endless, and they offer the teacher an assignment that provides insight into how well a student understands the subject being written about. RAFT stands for
R= Role (Who is the writer? What perspective is the writer coming from? NOTE: This requires taking on a role different than the student.)
A= Audience (Who are you writing to?)
F= Format (What form will the writing take?)
T= Topic (What will you write about?)
For further details about the RAFT approach, check your textbook, pg. 231, or one of the links below.
First, design a RAFT assignment you would use in your content area. Your assignment needs to include at least four (4) options under each of the four letters of the acronym.
Second, create an example of your assignment that can serve as a guide for students who will be completing the assignment.
Third, include a 1-2 page explanation paper that provides the context in the classroom in which you would use this assignment. What unit would this be included in? What have students learned about? What do you hope to accomplish with this assignment? Would you have the students help create the choices or would you provide them? Why did you make the choices that you did?
